Chamber Offers Business Fitness Workshops - Starting with Thrive, Don't Just Survive on March 26th

Now is the time for businesses to review their bottom lines and make changes accordingly in order to survive in this economy. The Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce recognizes these challenges and is pleased to announce a series of new “business fitness” workshops with Palius & O’Kelley to help Chamber members refine their business models and finances. Thrive, Don’t Just Survive, the first workshop, will be held on March 26th from 8-10 a.m. in the Jean Blois Community Room at the Chamber.

“The Chamber should be the one-shop stop for all business resources and we are pleased to be able to host a workshop with this depth to help our Chamber members as they navigate these tough economic times,” said Kristen Amyx, President & CEO.

Recessions “shuffle the deck” more than boom times do. A study by Bain & Company found that twice as many companies made the leap from laggards to leaders during the last recession as during surrounding periods of economic calm. The study found that one-fifth of companies in the bottom quartile in their industries jumped to the top quartile during the 1990-91 recession. Meanwhile, more than a fifth of all “leadership companies” (top quartile) fell to the bottom quartile. Even though opportunities always exist to rise above the competitors at any time, the rises yielded from a recession seem to have a higher impact and endure beyond the recession. It was found that 70% of the companies that rose to the top sustained those gains that they made.

Maeda Palius, Co-owner of Palius & O’Kelley, said, “Do not accept a recession as a reason for a drop in sales. Do not make the mistake of believing your firm will accelerate past competitors once the economy recovers. If you start to notice things going wrong, evaluate your business’s health and make the necessary changes to adapt to the downturn.”

Thrive, Don’t Just Survive is geared toward CEOs, managers and finance staff and is just $25 for the two-hour intensive workshop for Chamber members. Register online at www.GoletaValleyChamber.com.

After the Thrive Don’t Just Survive, a 6-workshop series will kick off in May for those who want to go even more in depth. These workshops will be offered as a complete series in which one class will build upon the other. Visit the Chamber’s website at www.GoletaValleyChamber.com for additional information in upcoming weeks.

Finally, new business owners and those looking to start a business will have the opportunity to take advantage of free workshops targeting new businesses. These will be offered by the Chamber and Palius and O’Kelley and held quarterly in the Jean Blois Community Room at the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce.

“Often times new business owners have a great product, but lack the necessary financial and budgeting acumen of an established company. These sessions will help provide a framework for making good business decisions,” noted Amyx.
